[Full Review] Neutrogena Deep clean (hydrating vs. Brightening vs. original)

IMG_20170402_133836.jpg

Neutrogena is definitely a brand we have all seen before and at one time of our lives have used one or two of their products. For about 3-4 months, I have been using their deep cleansing oil to foam cleansers. I have tried out the entire cleansing to oil range: brightening (pink), Hydrating (Turquoise) and Original (Blue). I decided to do a full review of each of cleansers to give you an idea of which one you might what to go for.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
All the cleansers can be used in 3 ways
How to Use:
  1. Dry- Use the oil like consistency to remove make up then was up.
  2. Wet- Rub the oil together with water to create a foam and wash face/remove makeup.
  3. Double Cleanse (Wet & Dry): use both  steps one after the other.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Original Deep clean Cleansing oil to Foam (Blue)

Scent: Sweet and Floral (traditional Neutrogena scent), not overwhelmingly

Stars: ✩★★★★

Overall:

  • The scent of the product has the tradition scent of Neutrogena products.
  • The product is gentle enough to use everyday and is perfect for removing makeup.
  • Soothing on the skin.
  • Foams up when mixed with water.
  • Simple, one step product with no fuss.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 ♛ Deep Clean Hydrating Cleansing oil to Foam (Turquoise)
Unique Ingredients: Cucumber extract/juice (soothing, softening and hydrating), Rosemary leaf extract (antioxidant, protect against free radicals and soothing).
Scent: The scent is definitely refreshing and fresh, it is sweet without being overly fruity.
Stars: ★★★★★
Overall:
  • This is definitely my favourite cleanser out of the three.
  • It is really hydrating, soothing and cooling.
  • The scent is really amazing, its really fresh and feels amazing on my skin.
  • Out of all the cleansers I have used it is the best for removing makeup, I found that I don’t need makeup wipes to remove my mascara. I have always had an issue with cleansers being overly ‘squeaky’ clean, as I found that my skin just feels stripped its natural oils, this product both hydrates and removes the make up.
  • What else can I say… buy it and try it yourself!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Deep Clean Brightening Cleansing oil to Foam (Pink)

Unique Ingredients: Morus Alba Root extract AKA Mulberry extract (Rich in Vitamins and brightening effects), Rosemary leaf extract (antioxidant, protect against free radicals and soothing).

Scent: Fruity leaning towards a stronger Peach scent. I was pleasantly surprised with the scent of the product, having been a fan of peach scents, I was all for the scent. The scent isn’t super strong.

Stars: ✩✩★★★

Overall:

  • The product has a sweet and fresh scent that isn’t overwhelming.
  • The product is gentle enough to use everyday and is perfect for removing makeup.
  • Soothing on the skin.
  • Foams up when mixed with water.
  • Similar to the original where it offers hydration whilst offering some brightening properties.
  • The product isn’t particularly brightening in the short term however, after using it for 2-3 weeks I did get some compliments on how bright and how much lighter my skin was, whether it was this product alone it is difficult to say.

Hello, Hola, Bonjour… hehe my bad!

This year we were starting somewhat on a bad foot, blogging wise….Any who… the blogging must go on! With spring finally setting in here in Hong Kong and the humidity levels soaring my skin has been feeling especially finicky. It craves moisture but when using rich formulas, it feels like plaster on my skin and it has been feeling rather dull. There have been a few unique products that I have been eyeing.

The Peter Thomas Roth Meet your mask set

Having heard so many beauty gurus recommend their Pumpkin enzyme mask I have been curious to see how their other masks match up to the hype that is their pumpkin mask. I love sets like this because it gives you a chance to find the mask that is the best for your skin type, as well as gives you a chance to try all of their masks!

23 years old Rose gold Mask

The key word here is “Rose Gold”, yes I’m one of those people who have been sucked in to the Rose gold mask trend. I personally keep an eye on the 23 years old brand because of how innovative and unique their products are and this one caught my eye. A Rose gold mask? I’m in…

Update: The mask isn’t like a rose gold foil mask(which is something I thought it would be like), the serum inside is a light coral shade but is deeply hydrating. This mask covers your lips as well (no mouth hole), although a little strange it gives your lips a little spa treatment, leaving them hydrated after 1 use. Tip: lie on your back and don’t talk.

Apivita express mask: Anti-wrinkle and firming mask  with grape

One thing I like about this mask is the ingredients: no parabens, no silicone and propanediol (can cause sensitivity and irritability in some skin types). The ingredients are also fairly natural such as: olive oil and grape oil.I have yet to try any product from Apivita but have heard positive things about it… perhaps I should give it a try!  A natural mask yes!

Maybelline Eraser dark circles 110 fair

This is definitely one of my go to and most favourite concealers ever! I have been using this concealer religiously for the past 2 months and it instantly brightens my under-eyes as well as covers any un-welcomed acne. I highly recommend this to anyone who is struggling with dark under-eyes.

J.One Jelly Pack

This Jelly pack is in-fact a sleeping mask that requires no effort. It should be applied to the face after completing tour night time skin routine, the product claims that because of it’s ingredients it should take no time at all before your skin drinks up the product and then you are ready for bed! The ingredients are definitely appealing :

Low Molecular Hyaluronic Acid: moisturizing and Anti-wrinkle.Collagen, Water lotus Extract: brightens & soothes and Fullerene: reduces melanin.

3 Concept eyes White Milk Cream

I first saw this product in a Korean clothing store in Festival, the name totally escapes me but the concept of Milk cream and the cute but simple design of the product. The product claims that the product will leave your skin “smooth as milk” and has skin brightening effects … Ms Dull skin over here is just throwing her money at you… mean enough said.

23 years old Black Paint Rubar

This product is definitely a unique product from 23 years old. I think judging from it’s name “Rubar” you would be able to tell what the product is all about, a cleanser the rubs out impurities. The product claims to be a cleanser and a mask all at once, rubbing out skin dullness whilst removing blackheads and whiteheads.

Skin 79 Water Splash Mask

There seems to be an uncountable amount of mask on the market nowadays but this one grabbed my attention. The mask was separated into two: a pure cotton mask (dry) at the bottom of the packet and a “water tank” on the top of the mask. How these two would meet drew my attention and definitely led to me squishing around the “water tank” for a good few minutes. The reason behind separating the serum from the mask is apparently because if you separate them there is less need for preservative (you learn something every day!)

Concealing the undereyes: 2 Routines

Screen Shot 2017-01-29 at 17.03.07.png

Weirdly, I have two routines when it comes to concealing those undereye circles, which I like to alternate from time to time, depending on what I’m feeling that day and the coverage I need. However, both routines are fairly similar, it’s the change up of the products, as well as the types of products.

Routine 1:

Hydrate: The product that I usually use in this routine is the A.H.C The Real Eye Cream for Face. I would say this more of a serum than a cream, but I find this to be perfect for those days when I don’t have a lot of time. Plus, this tends to absorb a lot faster than a cream based eye cream, but the main reason for choosing this over a cream is that the foundation I use afterwards tends to be less heavy and less drying than a concealer would be. Hence, I find that I don’t need a super moisturizing eye cream as a base.

Conceal: The foundation that gives amazing coverage is the Lancome Blanc Expert Fluid Foundation, I love this product a lot. I find this product to cover my undereye circles, as well as any redness on my face, without it looking cakey at all. I find this product to have a brightening quality to it, without it setting into creases or looking a little flaky. Although, if my undereyes are looking worse than they usually do, I tend to use Routine 2 or add a bit of concealer where the foundation hasn’t covered.

Set: I usually set my undereyes with the Max Factor Cream Puff Candlelight Pressed Powder. I personally love the cream puff pressed powder, as I also own the translucent version of this product and it looks very natural, and keeps my face from looking too shiny after a long day. As for my eyes, I prefer to use the Candlelight version, where it has a pinkish tone to it, which helps to also counteract the purple colours under the eyes.

Routine 2:

Hydrate: With a concealer I tend to use a cream, as it tends to be more hydrating, as my undereyes tend to be on the drier side. So, concealers tend to look a little flaky if I don’t use an eye cream. So, I’ve been gravitating towards The Face Shop Collagen Eye Cream, which I’ve talked a lot about this product before. So, I won’t say too much about it, but it does leave my undereyes a lot more hydrated.

Conceal: The concealer I love using is the Maybelline Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circle Concealer and I can definitely say it is a lot of people’s favourite as well, because of it’s high coverage and it’s inexpensive price tag. For me, this concealer is one of the only concealers that doesn’t look too dry under the eye, while concealing the undereyes, even on the worst days.

Set: Recently, I have been using the Innisfree No Sebum Mineral Powder. The loose powder itself is soft and white. When applying the product to my undereyes, I find that area to feel softer and more matte. I can’t say much about whether or not the product controls the oil produced on your face throughout the day. As I have been strictly using it for under the eyes, since I haven’t had this product for too long, I will definitely give an update on how this product works in controlling oil.

So, those are my two routines

Best of 2016

Screen Shot 2017-01-22 at 5.30.27 pm.png

Hello world! It has been a while hasn’t it since I have blogged and I have no excuses except that my poor time-managment has left me with things piling up on me. Not a fun feeling. however, I really wanted to share a few of my favourite beauty products of 2016 with you guys. Please let me know what you think of it!

Neutrogena Deep Clean Oil to Foam Cleanser (original)

I have been using this cleanser for a good 4 months (around), it is my go to cleanser because of how moist my skin feels after using it. As I wear BB cream and waterproof mascara daily, I really wanted a cleanser that could both cleanse and remove my makeup easily. This did just the trick! You can apply the cleanser on dry skin and massage off the makeup or you could use it as a regular cleanser and with the bubbles formed, massage the makeup off, either way my skin is moist and clean after using it. Highly recommend!

Cliv Tomato Calluss and Vita C Mask

Believe me when I say, I have tried many types of sheet masks, however, I have found that this is the mask that I have found to be ultra hydrating, instantly brightening and soothing on the skin. Whenever I get the chance, or whenever I think my skin needs a pick me up, it is my ultimate go to mask. Use it at night before bed, remove the mask and see how bright your skin gets… wake up and your skin is dewy and bright!

St. Ives Apricot scrub

This year I have been through about 2 or 3 of these scrubs, not only do I use this on my face but on areas of my body where I think it needs a little more TLC. It is definitely one of the scrubs that offers a deeper exfoliation, smoothing out any imperfections, so once or twice a week is more than enough!

The Body Shop Oils of Life Sleeping Mask

The most soothing, hydrating, rich (but non-sticky) sleeping mask I have ever used. Everyone I have recommended it to has fallen in love with it. Leave it on at night and wake up with supple and plump skin. One word… amazing.

Read my full review here.

Soapberry Fo-Ti Shampoo

The ultimate natural remedy to detoxing your scalp, my hair always feels refreshed after using it and if you get hormonal dandruff or the occasional dandruff, this would be ideal for you!

Borghese Green Clay Mask

An amazing product for detoxing the skin, it strips away the dirt and impurities without stripping away your natural oils. Easily accessible and really effective on the skin, a must try for mask lovers!

Crest 3D White brilliance toothpaste (Any drugstore- mannings)

Having discovered this hidden diamond late last year I have been religiously using it daily and have found my teeth whiter that it has ever been! And before you cringe about the possibility of having sensitive teeth… I didn’t have any sensitivity on my teeth at all (this might differ from person to person so bear this in mind.)

More on this product here.

The Line 3D & 4D Mascara by Missha

Having previously loved the Benefit tinted eyelash mascara and the Revlon Dramatic definition, I decided to try something new for a change. The cute designs drew me and the affordable price (HKD $45) and after trying the 3D and 4D mascara I was hooked. Since then, I have purchased two more. They give you effortlessly natural lashes and holds the lashes fairly well.

Shiseido Future solution LX eye contour

This is by far the creamiest eye cream I have ever used, its rich, instantly brightens your under-eyes and plumping. What more could you want!

Winter Haircare Routine

Screen Shot 2017-01-01 at 17.49.56.png

I think it was definitely time for a new updated haircare routine. Especially since the weather has changed drastically, my hair has been feeling a lot drier. So, I ended up swapping around my products to fit the drier and colder weather.

For shampoo: I have been using the Yves Rocher Super Soft Shampoo with Witch Hazel. From what I have heard, this product is perfect when your scalp is feeling a little flaky due to the dryness of the weather. Also, I found that this shampoo is perfect for those who have sensitive skin or a sensitive scalp, it also leaves my hair feeling softer, which is definitely surprising, as shampoos tend to dry out my hair. Plus, the product itself is an ecofriendly product, both recyclable and biodegradable, which is a huge bonus.

Since the weather is way too dry for my thick and wavy hair: I always replace a conditioner with a treatment mask, especially during this time of the year. I’ve already talked about this product, but I will just say this product is without a doubt a product to look for. My hair always feels softer and my ends feel a lot healthier. Plus, it’s super inexpensive, and if you don’t know what I’m talking about, it is the L’Oreal Extraordinary Oil High Shine Hair Pack.

After air drying my hair and my hair is a little damp and then apply my hair oil on: The product I have been using is the Yves Rocher Hair Repair Oil. The oil has jojoba oil, which leaves my hair smelling and feeling great. Although, this product does feel like a lighter oil, in comparison to the L’Oreal Extraordinary oil. I find that this works just as well, without the weighing down effect. However, I do like that effect from the L’Oreal Oil, especially on days where my hair is feeling a lot frizzier or poofier, but I find this oil to be great for all hair types, without the oily feeling that some oils leave when you put too much.

Last step to my haircare routine, is the serum: Oddly enough, my hair actually loves the cooler weather, with the exception of the drier ends, my hair is a lot shinier and less frizzy, which seems to be the opposite for many. So, I have put away the frizz serums and replaced it with the Tony and Guy Shine Gloss serum for the extra sheen to the hair and to maintain some pesky flyaways. Usually, I apply one to two pumps of this product all over the hair and let my hair air dry.

So, that was my Winter haircare routine. I hope you found some new haircare products to include into your routine.

1 Brand 3 Products: Kiehls

screen-shot-2016-12-24-at-15-06-53

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser states that it”thoroughly cleanses skin and removes makeup without over-drying or stripping skin of its natural oils.” I definitely think that this cleanser  doesn’t strip the skin off of the essential oils, but I do find in the winter period that I need to use a face cream after cleansing, but that’s understandable. Plus, I find that a little goes a long way. Plus, this product is perfect for those with sensitive skin, because it is very gentle on the skin, as well as it being scentless.

Kiehl’s Facial Cream perfect again for those with sensitive skin. The product says “with continuous moisture replenishment throughout the day, leaves skin smooth, soft and healthy-looking.” I will agree that my skin does look replenished and it does leave my skin looking and feeling softer. Especially, when my skin is feeling really dry and dull, I find myself reaching for this facial cream, more than my other moisturisers, so it has definitely been an essential for me.

Kiehl’s Richly hydrating hand cream, a lovely hydrating and rich product, with a hint of coriander scent to it. However, the scent does dissipates after a while, if you’re not a big fan of scented hand creams. I have been loving this product a lot, because of the super dry weather, it has really helped hydrate and keep the skin nice and soft. The product is limited edition, so grab it quick!

So, these are 3 products and 1 brand. I hope you enjoyed it!

Battle of the Sleeping masks: L’oreal, Vichy and The Body Shop

screen-shot-2016-12-24-at-5-45-36-pm

Merry Christmas on behalf of Foodie and the Hipster! With it being christmas, the festivities can definitely leave your skin feeling dryer than usual (especially if you drink the night before, or so I have heard), your skin might just need a little pick me up.

I personally am a big fan of Sleeping masks, I think they are an essential to a lazy person’s skincare routine, or even if you don’t have one. All you need to do is massage these onto your face after cleansing and your skin is ready for bed. I have put together a review of three sleeping masks that I have tried over the winter holiday.

1.Body Shop’s Oils of life sleeping mask

Texture: Smooth, soothing, creamy and rich gel.

Hydration level: Ultra Hydrating.

Overall:  This mask is a favourite amongst all our family and friends, the mask offers amazing hydration lasting all through the night and ! Once applied it soaks into your skin, leaves it deeply hydrated and plump. Upon waking my skin doesn’t feel tight of dry, but still feels the same way it did after applying. The only downside would be that for those who don’t like stronger scents this might not be your favourite, it does have a strong initial herbal scent when applied which fades a little, however, is still there. Apart from the scent, the product is very effective and deeply hydrating, so if you want to try a new sleeping mask, I would definitely recommend you try this product!

2. Vichy Aqualia thermale sleeping mask

Texture: Bouncy, cooling Gel.

Hydration level: Hydrating. Lasts all night however, requires a moisturising top up in the morning, or double layers on days that are super dry.

Overall: This product is amazing on irritated sensitive skin, as most of Vichy’s skincare range is. For those whose skin is feeling a little red, this is the best to sooth it and reduce the redness as well as hydrating it. Although the product is hydrating, it does require a top up in the morning, or a double layer during the nights that your skin requires extra hydration. How I like to use it is, together with a serum/emulsion underneath for extra hydration.

3. L’oreal Hydra Fresh Sleeping Gel

Texture: A light gel.

Hydration level: Lasts 1-2 hours at the most.

Overall: I was a little disappointed with this product,to me an effective sleeping mask is a sleeping mask that can last through the night, non sticky and allow you to wake up still feeling moist. The Hydra Fresh sleeping gel, although wasn’t sticky, it absorbed very quickly into the skin and my skin still craved more moisture. Upon waking my skin felt slightly dry and slightly tight. Te weather has been fairly drying in Hong Kong, however, hong Kong it self is humid year round, so for those in more drier places, I wouldn’t recommend this product.
