Capsule Masks ft. H&M, Innisfree & Neutrogena [A Full Review]

P7010037.JPG

Capsule masks, they seem to be everywhere nowadays, multiple beauty brands are now offering different types of capsule masks to target different skin issues. Capsule masks are also great to bring when you are travelling as they are already mini sized (hint: ideal for our upcoming trip to Korea!). We decided to pick up a few types of capsule masks from a variety of brands: Innisfree, H&M and Neutrogena.

Neutrogena Capsule Sleeping Masks HKD$24.90 each @Mannings

This capsule masks are a brand new line from Neutrogena, I noticed these about a week ago. So far they have only released 2 masks, the fine fairness for wrinkles and whitening and the hydro boost, ideal for deep hydration.

Amount of uses: Multiple Uses (4 generous uses)

Scent: Like most Neutrogena skincare, it has a slight fruity and floral scent.

Effectiveness (both):

  • Ideal for those who sleep in an air conditioned room.
  • Hydrating
  • Non-irritating on sensitive skin
  • Absorbs into your skin quite quickly, whilst forming a protective layer on the surface of your skin when slightly dry. (no pillow stickiness).
  • Soothing on the skin
  • TIP: If you place it in the fridge overnight and then apply it onto your skin, it has a really cooling property.
  • FINE FAIRNESS:  Although you might not see a significant whitening in your skin, you may notice slight lightening of freckles upon using it twice (consecutively).
  • HYDRO BOOST: This sleeping mask is very similar to the Laneige water sleeping mask. It is hydrating and soothing on the skin. After sleeping through the night in air-conditioning my skin doesn’t feel tight but supple hydrated.

H&M Skincare Capsule Mask  HKD$29.90 @ H&M

Amount of uses: 2 uses.

Scent: If I am brutally honest, I don’t particularly like the scents of these masks, they are very artificially scented and I don’t find them very pleasant. The Manuka Honey mask is the closest to a “natural” honey scent. However, if I had to identify the scent. I would identify them as this:

Manuka Honey: honey with a slight citrus scent. Charcoal Pumice: woody scent and Chinese herbal scent. Pomegranate and Mango: fruit yogurt scent.

Effectiveness:

  • Manuka Honey:  The honey mask is slightly sticky. It applies easily and smoothly on the skin. I had a few family members mentioned a weird scent… unfortunately it was coming from the mask. The Mask also dried very quickly and peeled off easily. My skin felt really clean and well cleansed.
  • Pomegranate and Mango: This mask acts just like a clay mask, after applying the face mask you leave it on for about 3-4 minutes (compared to 10-15mins suggested by the instructions). This mask dries very quickly and is very thick. If you save it for a 2nd time, you might find it a little difficult to apply.
  • Charcoal Pumice: The Charcoal mask contains fine pumice grains that will help to help exfoliate your skin. After exfoliating you leave the mask on your skin and wait for it to dry. Because of the pumice grains and the act of massaging your skin you can help to scrub off some of the dead skin, prepping the skin for the detoxing properties of the mask. Not bad but a little drying.  (Tip: Try to use this mask the day that you open it)

Star Rating: ★★

UK link: Honey Charcoal Pomegranate&Mango / HK link: in-stores only

Definitely a very standard mask. They do have a variety of capsule masks that address various skin troubles however, they I haven’t found them too effective and because they don’t come in a resealable package, the clay based masks can dry out quickly. I have found the peel off masks more effective than the clay masks.

P7010039.JPG

Innisfree Casule recipe pack: ‘Bija &Tea Tree’ and ‘Canola Honey’ HKD$15-20 each @innisfree

Innisfree has made a huge change in their packaging of their capsule masks. In the past they were non resealable masks, so for the clay masks you definitely need use them up upon opening them. However, now they have a a lid for you to reseal and keep for a later use. 5 points to innisfree for this design. IT is now perfect for traveling with.

Amount of uses: 4 uses

Scent: Canola Honey: light, floral and sweet (honey). Bija & Tea Tree: the scent is quite pungent at first (strong herbal/medicinal scent) however, after applying it on the skin it becomes tolerable.

Effectiveness:

  • Canola Honey: Applies like a dream, it isn’t sticky like most honey masks, it has a runnier consistency (almost like a serum). I wouldn’t recommend applying too much, because of the runny consistency it has a tendency to drip. Be wary if you have sensitive skin, my sister (the hipster) had an unfortunate mild irritation to the mask, so please apply it onto your wrist before applying to your face.
  • Bija and Tea Tree: The clay texture is really smooth and moist so that it applies like a dream. It is hydrating on the skin, at first I saw ‘tea-tree’ and thought that it might have some acne fighting/pore minimising properties however, it does have a slight minty feel on the skin and soothes.
  • Volcanic Clay: We have also tried the Volcanic Clay capsule which is almost like a trial version of their volcanic clay masks (tubs).

RB Tea (Cafe Review)

Causeway Bay is definitely one of my favourite places to go in Hong Kong, with its close proximity to other areas such as Wanchai (15-20 minute walk from behind Time Square) of if you choose to take the MTR, its just a few minutes away from busy Central and Admiralty.

Screen Shot 2017-06-26 at 6.45.03 pm.png

I have been to RBTea twice so far and I love the relaxed ambience that the cafe has. You definitely feel like you are in a garden having a picnic with all the green (plastic) plants and bird inspired lighting and ‘Swing’ chairs… wait… yes I did say Swing chairs, although there are only 2 of these seats (that can seat 4 people) these chairs are held up by powerful wire hanging from the ceiling. Definitely a unique concept, but you must get their early if you want these seats.

20170204_135752-1

The menu is quite varied in what they offer, from crispy waffle sandwiches to smoked salmon pasta and dessert in between. There is something for everyone. Here are a few of the menu items I have tried so far:

20170430_124129-1

Crispy waffle with fish fillet, grilled tomatoes, chips and a small fruit salad.

Price: $74

Taste: This was delicious and surprisingly not too filing. The Waffles although aren’t particularly crispy are light and with the syrup they give you are quite delicious. The Scramble Eggs were definitely the highlight of this dish, creamy and smooth, they really melt in your mouth. The Fish, this was a little disappointing, I found them a little bland although there was a little cream sauce and mushrooms drizzled on top, what I ended up doing was dipping it in Ketchup, which I found complemented the fish. Finally the Tomato, chips, baked beans and fruit salad, these were all ok, the potato chips were a little soggy (but I love soggy chips… don’t hate me), the fruit salad consisted of a few pieces of fruit and aloe vera which I found was a good note to end on as everything else on the plate was a little rich.

20170204_140905-1

Creamy Smoked Salmon Pasta

Taste: The Pasta Sauce is creamy and smooth, however lacks seasoning, however, the smoked salmon which is salty helps to balance out the creaminess. However, you will have to break up the salmon into pieces to have enough for every bite-full.

20170204_141102-1

Milk Bubble Tea Pancakes

[RECOMMENDATION] Chocolate Milk Tea with Oreo & Salted Cheese (Hot) $38

This is definitely a must try! It is by far my favourite drink to order at RBTea. The name might sound a little odd because of the salted cheese, but I assure you it is a rich chocolate drink with a hint of milk tea and a slightly salty foam on the top.

Crunchy Toasts with Sausage in Pesto Sauce $62

This is a toast which is covered in a creamy cheesy pesto sauce with arugula and sausage. I think judging by the description it is quite filling so I wouldn’t recommend it as a snack, however, it would be great to share together with something sweet.

20170501_000947

Overall, this cafe has a great calming atmosphere and quick service. The food is homemade and has unique menu such as bubble tea  pancakes and popcorn hot chocolate (limited edition). Its a great place to hang out, have a quick chat with friends and share a few delicious menu items.

Food service: semi serviced

MEMEBOX First Flagship Store [Experience]

20170430_143020

Memebox, I think one of my very first posts I posted featured the memebox. If you are a Korean beauty fanatic, like I am, you will have heard of this brand. The brand features skincare and makeup from their own line and various other Korean skincare brands.

Both my sister and I both found out that Memebox was in Hong Kong, that weekend we headed out to see what the store had in store. The store is a florescent pink colour with all the windows blocked out. It is definitely a building that you won’t miss and is just opposite the busy Hysan Place in Causeway bay. Did I mention that is 2 stories high?

20170430_143959

The first floor is mostly made up of makeup, with mascaras, foundation to lipstick. There is a huge variety of makeup that you can browse through. I personally went in to look for their buy one get one free dual ended mascara. We were greeted by one of the staff who worked there, a lady with blue ombre hair, holo eyeshadow and the sharpest winged eyeliner. We both aren’t fans of sales persons who follow us around the store asking us every 5 seconds what we would like to see. She allowed us time to browse around and would give us a hand whenever we asked.

20170430_144624

The 2nd Floor was all about the Korean skincare, the metal grated stair case lead to the most incredible shelf display with the various types of skincare displayed in an orderly fashion (image above). The room featured a large sink area in the centre where you could try the various skincare products out and an refrigerater display for the sheet masks they had on offer (below).

20170430_144615

After our visit to the store, we left with quite a few goodies:

The Nooni Snowflake Whipping Cleanser

The Nooni Marshmallow Whip Maker

Pony Effect Pro Fit Liquid Concealer

x 2 I’m Dual Mascara (Brown and Black) *Buy 1 Get 1

IMG_3534.jpg

Overall, the Memebox Pop up store is definitely an experience I would encourage all k-beauty lovers to experience, it has a relaxed feel and definitely has one or two gems that you will find that you have yet to see in other drugstores such as nooni and memebox’s own brand.

A review of the products will be up later this week! Stay tuned!

What I read in May

IMG_3550.jpg

Since December 2016, I have been getting into reading and made it a goal to read at least 40 books this year. So, this summer I thought I would make it a goal to write up what I have read during that month. So here it is…

IMG_3547

The Series of Unfortunate Events

The series follows the children journey to find their permanent guardian after the death of their parents from a tragic fire. In the ‘The Reptile Room‘ we see their experience with their second guardian Dr Montgomery and the unfortunate events that follow. As for ‘The Wide Window‘ it follows their lives with Aunt Josephine and ‘The Miserable Mill‘ with their guardian Sir, as well as their experience in the Lumbermill. With that being said, each book ends tragically as it states in the beginning of every book. Personally, I love this series, and it’s my second time reading it through since I was a kid. I love the quirkiness of the stories, the family element, but also the mystery that is connected to it. This series is not just for kids, but for any age, and I think anyone can take something from it. The fun part of it is that I have been watching it alongside the TV show, and it is kind of fascinating to compare how you had imagine it and the depiction from the show.  It is a series that I definitely recommend anyone to get into.

The Harrowing

The Harrowing‘, is a story that follows 5 peoples experience of the paranormal during their Thanksgiving break in the college dorms. I must say this book was my introductory book to the genre of Horror, and I must say while I was reading this book it felt like I was watching a horror movie, so it definitely tick that box. In addition to that, I think it has its creepier moments in it, maybe even creepier than just watching it, as it is up to your imagination. However, I felt like there was too much teenage angst and it was your typical horror movie story, but there was definitely a lot of suspense and left me at the edge of my seat.

The Lives of Stella Bain

The Lives of Stella Bain‘ is an Historical Fiction set in 1916, that follows a woman who wakes up in a hospital in France, and she can only remember that her name is Stella Bain and that she can drive an ambulance. There is a lot to the story, however if I told you what goes on, it would spoil it. So, what I will say is that the story was so very intriguing and compelling, however it lack the suspense that I was expecting from the synopsis. Yet, the story itself was definitely satisfying, and a good quick read, especially since I read this after ’13 Reasons Why’ it allowed me not to linger to long on the book, so that was great. Overall, if you are looking for a good historical fiction to read, that has its twist in it, this would be a good one to try out.

The Rest Of Us Just Live Here

My gosh this was an amazing book! I loved how there were elements of mental health issues raised, alongside a compelling story of a group of characters who are experiencing things such as monster invasion, vampires and etc. Funny enough, the characters that we see are not the so called “chosen one”, or the one to save the world. It is definitely something I have not encountered in a book before. I loved how the ‘The Rest of Us Just Live Here‘ had so many relatable elements to it; from the relationships between the characters, to the situations that they encounter, such as graduation, prom, hanging out with your friends etc. This story reminds so much of ‘Paper Towns‘ by John Green, but it adds that additional mystery and fantasy element to it, which I could not get enough of. So, this was definitely a brilliant read.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

What can I say about ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone‘, this is definitely a nostalgic read, and really made me fall back into reading more fantasy books, but also this book has left me craving to watch all the movies and read all the books again. Much like ‘The Series of Unfortunate Events’, after reading the book I ended up re-watching the first movie, and it was great to compare the book and the movie version. I will say that this book took me a while to really get into it, and it’s mainly the reason that I knew the world all to well, so there wasn’t an element of surprise, that I usually enjoy in a fresh new book, yet this doesn’t mean that the book is boring, it is just the element of surprise that I lost, due to the familiarity of the story. In contrast, there isn’t too much to add, that hasn’t been already said, but it is a fantastic read, and really allows you to dive into a mystical and wondrous world of magic.

[New] L’oreal Hydra Fresh White Milky Essence foam

Its been a while since I have felt excited about a product like this and I believe I might have found my new holy grail essence!

IMG_3535

I must admit that I have been wary of L’oreal after being disappointed by their cleansers, I have always found them too drying on my skin and my skin always feels “squeaky clean” in a bad way. Anyways, I won’t ponder on this… because I think I found product that has changed my mind about the brand overall!

Ok lets get started, this essence is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! *pushes desk chair back and puts hands up.  It took me a while to find a Watson’s/ Mannings that stocked this item because, they were sold out in my local shops so that is a clear sign that this product is turning HK beauty lovers heads!

Texture:

  • The texture, as stated on the product comes out like a shaving creme, you press the top of the bottle and fluffy (almost shaving foam) cloud of product emerges. It is light, refreshing, cooling, airy and smells amazing by the way. However, when you start to massage it onto your skin the foamy texture disappears and you are left with water like essence, coating your skin in a light layer of essence.
  • Cooling and soothing effect on the skin.

Scent:

  • Light Floral scent that fades once absorbed into the skin.

After 1st use: Hydrated and plumped skin. Found that my skin looks super glowy and dewy, it takes about 5 seconds to soak into your skin and will blend in with your moisturisers like a dream.

20170531_183110-2.jpg

Over night: Your skin looks dewy and plump. I have been given complements on my skin’s dewyness and how clear my skin looks. I can only associate my skin’s dewyness to the only product I have changed in my skincare routine… this product.

IMG_3537

Cons:

  • If you don’t like the look of overly dewy skin then you might not like this product.
  • If you are not a fan of scented products the initial scent may be strong but be reminded that this will fade however, the scent lingers a little.

Overall: So far I have been using this product for a week and I love how hydrated my skin looks. It’s soothing and cooling at the same time and the cool foam to essence effect is truly unique concept! I have encouraged most of my family to try this product out, so if you have yet to get your hands on this product then go try it out!

Traveling with: Kiehl’s products

Recent.jpg

When I go traveling I keep everything really simple. Especially when it comes to my skincare routine, and it’s mainly because I either don’t have the time or I’m way to tired. So, here is what I like to bring when I’m traveling.

SKIN

First step: the Ultra Facial Cleanser, is a perfect travel cleanser, not only because I was able to find the smaller size of the cleanser, but because my skin tends to be sensitive while I’m traveling. I find this cleanser to be the right amount of gentleness and cleanliness. Plus, it doesn’t leave my skin feeling rubbery and dry.

Second Step: the ultra facial toner. This is another very gentle toner, which has some similarities to my Etude House Wonder Pore toner, in the way that it doesn’t dry out my skin, but adds a bit of moisture after cleansing. However, I will say that I am not overly picky when it comes to toners, as long as it doesn’t break me out, I’m happy. Yet, if the toner adds a bit of hydration to my skin, that is definitely a plus for me.

Third Step: the Ultra Facial Cream. Now this is a product that everyone should try, especially if you have sensitive skin. It’s such a gentle but an ultra hydrating moisturiser, and a little goes a long, long way. I find when my skin isn’t the best or it’s rashing up, I always gravitate towards it. While traveling you don’t know how your skin will react so having this product at hand is great.

Optional step: Super Multi-corrective cream. This is an optional step for me, so I don’t use it all the time. It usually comes in handy mainly in the colder months, when my skin is super dry or peeling. Yet I also use it from time to time when I’ve been using a drying clay mask, it often leaves my skin feeling extra dry so adding a creamier or richer moisturiser is a must, in order to re-hydrate your skin. And on the random occasions I use it as eye cream, because why not!

Last Step: Super Multi corrective eye opening serum. For its name I definitely feel like this is a lighter eye cream than it suggest, as it has a water like consistency to it. But this is still a good everyday eye cream that is perfect for traveling, plus it does leave my eyes feeling hydrated, so it’s perfect for the summer.

HAIR

Shampoo: The Amino Acid Shampoo. Let me just say that this product smells incredible! It smells exactly like coconuts, which is a given since the product contains coconut oil. But what I really love about it is that it leaves no residue behind, and leaves my fair feeling really clean and light. (which is great since I have a lot of hair, plus it being thick as well) So, it definitely is a necessity to bring on your travels.

Conditioner/treatment: If you know me I tend to use a treatment/ mask as my conditioner, as I found my hair needs a ton of moisture, so using just a regular light conditioner isn’t enough. So, the swell hair mask (which I know isn’t a Kiehl’s product but…) seems to be a good one to bring, mainly due to its size. The mask is a fairly thick consistency, however I can’t say too much about the effectiveness since I haven’t given it a full go to know.

BODY

Body Cleanser and Lotion: Nashi Blossom & Pink Grapefruit. Again two other products that I am not picky about, but the smell of this body cleanser and lotion really reminds me of the beach and the summer, so cracking it out seems appropriate.

LIPS

Lip Balm: Kiehl’s lip Balm in Pear. An incredible lip balm for those whose lips are drying away. I remember using this a lot during the winter, because my lips were so dry. But knowing that traveling on a plane and the air conditioning indoors will be a factor that I would encounter (of course) I have to bring something to stop the annoying feeling of dry lips.

HANDS

Handcream: Richly Hydrating Handcream in Coriander. I know it sounds weird and isn’t everybody’s cup of tea, but I like the scent quite a lot. Its not too pungent or sickly it’s just right. Plus, I’m a person who is always washing my hands, so they’re always so dry. So, having a good, rich hand cream is so important for me.

So, those were the products perfect for traveling. I hope this helped you to pack for any traveling you may do.

[Full Review] Neutrogena Deep clean (hydrating vs. Brightening vs. original)

IMG_20170402_133836.jpg

Neutrogena is definitely a brand we have all seen before and at one time of our lives have used one or two of their products. For about 3-4 months, I have been using their deep cleansing oil to foam cleansers. I have tried out the entire cleansing to oil range: brightening (pink), Hydrating (Turquoise) and Original (Blue). I decided to do a full review of each of cleansers to give you an idea of which one you might what to go for.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
All the cleansers can be used in 3 ways
How to Use:
  1. Dry- Use the oil like consistency to remove make up then was up.
  2. Wet- Rub the oil together with water to create a foam and wash face/remove makeup.
  3. Double Cleanse (Wet & Dry): use both  steps one after the other.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Original Deep clean Cleansing oil to Foam (Blue)

Scent: Sweet and Floral (traditional Neutrogena scent), not overwhelmingly

Stars: ✩★★★★

Overall:

  • The scent of the product has the tradition scent of Neutrogena products.
  • The product is gentle enough to use everyday and is perfect for removing makeup.
  • Soothing on the skin.
  • Foams up when mixed with water.
  • Simple, one step product with no fuss.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 ♛ Deep Clean Hydrating Cleansing oil to Foam (Turquoise)
Unique Ingredients: Cucumber extract/juice (soothing, softening and hydrating), Rosemary leaf extract (antioxidant, protect against free radicals and soothing).
Scent: The scent is definitely refreshing and fresh, it is sweet without being overly fruity.
Stars: ★★★★★
Overall:
  • This is definitely my favourite cleanser out of the three.
  • It is really hydrating, soothing and cooling.
  • The scent is really amazing, its really fresh and feels amazing on my skin.
  • Out of all the cleansers I have used it is the best for removing makeup, I found that I don’t need makeup wipes to remove my mascara. I have always had an issue with cleansers being overly ‘squeaky’ clean, as I found that my skin just feels stripped its natural oils, this product both hydrates and removes the make up.
  • What else can I say… buy it and try it yourself!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Deep Clean Brightening Cleansing oil to Foam (Pink)

Unique Ingredients: Morus Alba Root extract AKA Mulberry extract (Rich in Vitamins and brightening effects), Rosemary leaf extract (antioxidant, protect against free radicals and soothing).

Scent: Fruity leaning towards a stronger Peach scent. I was pleasantly surprised with the scent of the product, having been a fan of peach scents, I was all for the scent. The scent isn’t super strong.

Stars: ✩✩★★★

Overall:

  • The product has a sweet and fresh scent that isn’t overwhelming.
  • The product is gentle enough to use everyday and is perfect for removing makeup.
  • Soothing on the skin.
  • Foams up when mixed with water.
  • Similar to the original where it offers hydration whilst offering some brightening properties.
  • The product isn’t particularly brightening in the short term however, after using it for 2-3 weeks I did get some compliments on how bright and how much lighter my skin was, whether it was this product alone it is difficult to say.
