I Cremeria: Hot Chocolate Affogato
This is post is a bit of a throw back to about a week ago when I was back in warm Hong Kong. I have heard from family and friends that it is stormy and rainy now after a Typhoon passed just last night. Here in the UK, typhoons are not something anyone worries about as it non-occuring. I often find I have to explain to people what a typhoon is when meeting new people. But… this post is not about the weather at all, it is quite the opposite.
So back in Hong Kong, it was really warm and I had just picked up a few mooncakes from the counters in Sogo. After having a brief lunch in Starbucks I was craving something sweet and came across this place. I had seen the shop once after riding the escalator up the world trade centre. I hadn’t thought much of it but decided to look at the menu.
The shop is on the left hand side of the escalators, easy to miss but if you are one who is in need of some…
“super smooth, silky, melt in your mouth, creamy ice-cream made from Hokkaido milk. “
(Am I making you drool yet?) … this is definitely a place I would recommend. I know there are a variety of places to get ice-cream or fro-yo like this in Causeway bay but this is one of the few that I have really fallen in love with.
The store has a vintage italian/french vibe with lit candles lighting the way to the marbled counter, I felt like I was walking in to a traditional gelato store in Italy, not that I would know how might look like, but I have seen other peoples vlogs, so I’m an expert in this, do you trust me? No, I wouldn’t too? Delirious 🙂 But it immediately drew me in to the chic store. Most of the times stores like these put me off from entering as their prices are often super crazy and I always feel under dress when stepping in in my shorts and Superman t-shirt but this one had a really family vibe. It might have helped that there was a little boy sitting with his father, eating Matcha flavoured icecream, with green lips coated in it.
I was in the mood for something sweet and chocolatey, you might think that they don’t have any chocolatey ice creams/froyos available as the majority of the menu was decorated in Matcha flavoured ice creams/froyos. But it you look down to the bottom they have a chocolate flavour called “Hot Chocolate Affogado” hell yes! Of course the pricing isn’t going to be as cheap as Yomama or ice-cream from Mcdonald’s, but their pamphlets emphasised on their quality milk that was used in their products, so $48 wasn’t so bad. The service was excellent, the cashier can speak both english and chinese fairly well, so no fret.
The best part of getting my Affogato was probably the little demonstration they did before they gave it to me and stupidly I was overly excited and forgot to take a picture of it, so here is a illustration on how it went.
Here is the Story of what happened: The plain Icecream was sitting elegantly on the counter top, the cashier called me to the front with a smile, the server, was holding a hot steaming cup of thick, glossy chocolate above the ice-cream. He held the chocolate for a second as others leaned on the edge of their seats to watch what was going to happen, even the little boy covered in ice cream stopped to stare. My eyes glistened as I watched the chocolate pour from the little jar and onto my ice-cream, melting it ever so slightly creating a marbled effect, like their marbled walls. Everyone stood around and asked what it was, lets just say I was a very proud owner of the “Hot chocolate Affogato”.
How was that? Did I make up for the lack of video or photo?
Look at the spoon, Is it really metal? No Its actually plastic! Such a cool design, looks just like the real thing!
The taste was amazing super rich and creamy. You can really feel how smooth the ice-cream was because it just melted slowly allowing you to taste the richness and quality of ice-cream. I do recommend you to bring a bottle of water after eating this as it is pretty sweet after you licked the spoon. However, quickly eat it or it will melt into a warm chocolate drink, not bad but it might be a little weird to be gulping down your ice cream like a drink, but if you like it that way, then go for it 🙂 I too had to hold back myself from licking the bottom.
They also have seasonal flavours, here are a few from their instagram (which is beautiful so go follow them)
